Ecclesiart

Welcome to Ecclesiart

Ecclesiart is ACE's online project to give prominence to significant works of Modern and contemporary art since 1920 in UK churches and cathedrals. The selected works represent the diversity of high quality church commissions and reflect developments in both artistic practice and ecclesiastical art and design. The intention is to

  • stimulate debate about the merits of such works
  • encourage further nominations from the public as well as a selected panel of publicly-known figures from the worlds of art and religion
  • demonstrate the variety and richness of the works which are part of a collective ownership
  • encourage increased responsibility towards works which may be under-appreciated

How to nominate a work of art

Write to ACE with as much information as possible on a work of art you think should be included in Ecclesiart. Images are extremely helpful and we particularly welcome a short theological reflection on why you would nominate the work, no longer than 150 words. Please note that we do not accept nominations from artists for their own work.

We are currently particularly looking for works in gold and silver.

All permanent works shortlisted for the ACE Award for Art in a Religious Context are automatically added to Ecclesiart. For all other nominations, the Director and trustees of ACE reserve the right to select works which they determine as meeting the criteria of aptness to context, artistic and technical merit and appropriate theological meaning.
