Biography:

Thomas Monnington trained at the Slade School of Art and then went on to a three-year scholarship at the British School in Rome where he met and subsequently married a fellow student Winifred Knights. During the Second World War Monnington worked on camouflage designs before being commissioned to make paintings of aerial warfare. As his worked developed towards the abstract in his later years he became the first president of the Royal Academy to paint in abstract and geometric forms.
